Will Windows Encoders Become More Relevant with Xbox/ESPN Partnership?

June 11, 2012Posted by csandy

At E3 Microsoft announced it is expanding its relationship with ESPN to offer ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3 as live content viewable on the xBox360. Sports are one of the largest markets for live video streaming and a significant market space from products like NewTek’s TriCaster.

Flash commands the lion’s share of live webcasts. Will the desire to stram to in-home microsoft gaming consoles see a renaissance of window media encoder/expression/smooth streaming/silverlight based encoders? While TriCaster allows streaming in multiple formats, including windows, I have rarely seen it used. Flash is definitely dominant. But after Adobe’s announcements regarding Flash support on Mobile devices, and the recent Microsoft announcement regarding ESPN (probably the most valuable premium video content on any delivery platform), has the time for Windows Media Encoding come?

Time will tell.
