This is an unboxing of the Blackmagic Design Production Studio 4K. As the name implies, it is a 4K (4 times HD resolution) capable video switcher. This model is a sibling to the BMD Television Studio. The 4K, like the TVS, has a 1 rack unit design, but that’s pretty much where the similarity ends. The TVS is a 6 input switcher, while the Production Studio has 8 inputs – 4 HDMI and 4 SDI. The Production Studio 4K also has source buttons on the front as well as a small preview monitor.
Another distinguishing factor from the earlier model is the ability to ingest analog as well as digital video. There are unbalanced RCA stereo inputs as well as balanced XLR stereo inputs and outputs. Three program outs are available with 2 SDI and 1 HDMI connector. There is also an 6G-SDI output for auxiliary sources. The production studio can be genlocked either with a bi-level standard def black burst signal or a tri-level HD signal by connecting to a BNC connector on the back of the unit.
While having a little more depth than the TVS, the Production 4K has an integrated power supply so all you need to do is add your power cable for your country. The version I had did not come with the power cable. I’m not sure if the rest of the production run will be the same. There was a note in the box that the installation CD was not available and to download the required software.
My first impression is that this unit is very well-built and functional. Stay tuned for a more in-depth review.
