Dongle or code?

April 1, 2014Posted by csandy

It’s a question I’ve struggled with since 80s. Dongle or access code? Ever since my first word processor, which was Paperclip for the Commodore 64 and included a dongle, I never really liked the things.

More than 30 years later, I’m faced with a similar dilemma. There’s a competent playback program called playback Pro which comes in either an access key version or a dongle version.

So the question is: key or dongle? What would you choose?.

I prefer the code myself. I think it is a more flexible ownership model. If you are on a jobsite somewhere and you need to get the program running on a machine in an emergency use is just a few mouse clicks away. Besides, a dongle is just one more piece of critical gear that can get misplaced.
