BMD Hyperdeck Shuttle Unboxing

August 19, 2011Posted by csandy

This is an unboxing of the Black Magic Design Hyperdeck shuttle. Sorry for the poor video quality – this video was really an afterthought and I was just seeing if my flip cam still actually worked. But it turned out to be a useful rant, so I’ve posted it here.

Some interesting things to note:

  1. The shuttle is exceptionally well built. Everything feels solid and the case is a very thick aluminum.
  2. It’s a little bigger than you might have expected from product photos. But as you can see from the video, still quite small.
  3. It does not have regular BNC connectors. They are DIN 1.0/2.3 connectors. You will need an adapter cable.
  4. The adapter cable does not come with the unit, but you do get a handy set of power connectors for every type of socket on the planet.
  5. I would rather have had a North American specific power adapter and have them ship adapter SDI cables instead of the extra plugs.
  6. Read the recommendations on which SSD to buy!
  7. The SSD has to be HFS+ (Apple Extended) formatted. You can’t do this unless you have a Mac or extra software for your PC.
  8. Additional costs with the Hyperdeck Shuttle are roughly = $50-60 for adapter cables, $100+ for an SSD, $20 – $50 dollars for Mac formatting software = $170+ above what you paid for your shuttle – but still well below what you would pay for a similar device. SSD costs (which can run in the thousands depending on capicity) are really the limiting factor.
